Lemosho Route

Kilimanjaro’s Remote and Scenic Masterpiece

Duration: 8 Days | Optional 7-Day Version | Exceptional Acclimatization

The Lemosho Route is often praised as the most beautiful trail to Kilimanjaro’s summit — remote, pristine, and rich in both ecological diversity and dramatic views. Beginning on the western side of the mountain, it offers climbers a quiet, wilderness experience with exceptional opportunities for wildlife sightings in the early stages and excellent acclimatization throughout. This route eventually joins the popular Machame trail at the Lava Tower, offering a perfect balance of solitude and summit success.

Day 1: Londorossi Gate – Lemosho Glade – Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,750 m)

Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Moshi or Arusha to Londorossi Gate, where registration is completed. Continue by vehicle to the Lemosho Glade trailhead (2,100 m). From here, begin your trek through lush rainforest — a region known for possible sightings of buffalo, antelope, and even elephant. After 3–4 hours, arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp (Swahili for “Big Tree”), nestled in the forest.
🚶 Time: 3–4 hours | Distance: ~6 km | Ascent: +650 m

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa – Shira Ridge – Shira 1 Camp (3,500 m)

Climb steadily out of the forest and into the giant heather and moorland zone. The trail offers stunning views as you ascend to Shira Ridge (3,600 m) and then descend slightly to the Shira Plateau, a vast expanse of high-altitude wilderness. Camp tonight by a stream at Shira 1.
🚶 Time: 5–6 hours | Distance: ~8 km | Ascent: +750 m

Day 3: Shira 1 – Shira 2 Camp (3,840 m)

Enjoy a leisurely trek across the plateau with breathtaking views of Kibo Peak rising above the clouds. This day is designed for acclimatization, with optional side hikes to explore the surrounding ridges and volcanic formations. Set camp at Shira 2, in open alpine meadows.
🚶 Time: 3–4 hours | Distance: ~7 km | Ascent: +340 m

Day 4: Shira 2 – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp (3,950 m)

Today you trek high and sleep low. Ascend to the towering Lava Tower (4,630 m), a dramatic volcanic formation, then descend into the lush Barranco Valley. This classic acclimatization day boosts your chances of a successful summit.
🚶 Time: 6–7 hours | Distance: ~10 km | ⬆ +790 m, ⬇ -680 m

Day 5: Barranco Camp – Karanga Valley (4,000 m)

Begin the day by scaling the steep yet exhilarating Barranco Wall — one of the route’s most iconic and rewarding sections. After conquering the wall, traverse alpine ridges and descend into the Karanga Valley, nestled beneath the looming Southern Glaciers.
🚶 Time: 3–4 hours | Distance: ~5 km | ⬆ +150 m

Day 6: Karanga – Barafu Camp (4,600 m)

The trail climbs steadily to Barafu Camp, your final base before summit day. Set on a barren, windswept ridge, Barafu (meaning “ice” in Swahili) offers commanding views of the summit route and Mawenzi Peak. Rest, hydrate, and prepare for your midnight summit attempt.
🚶 Time: 3 hours | Distance: ~4 km | ⬆ +600 m

Day 7: Barafu – Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – Mweka Camp (3,100 m)

Your summit bid begins just after midnight. Navigate the steep scree slopes to reach Stella Point (5,735 m) in time for a glorious sunrise, then continue around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak — the top of Africa. After celebratory photos, descend back to Barafu for brunch, then continue the descent to Mweka Camp, where you’ll sleep in the comfort of thicker air.
🚶 Time: 11–14 hours | Distance: ~17 km | ⬆ +1,295 m, ⬇ -2,795 m

Day 8: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Return to Moshi/Arusha

Your final day is a pleasant walk down through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. The forest teems with birds, colobus monkeys, and tropical flora. After signing out, your driver will meet you for the transfer back to your hotel.
🚶 Time: 3–4 hours | Distance: ~10 km | ⬇ -1,500 m

Optional 7-Day Version

For experienced hikers or those on tighter schedules, the acclimatization day (Day 3) can be skipped, completing the route in 7 days. However, we highly recommend the 8-day itinerary to increase summit success and reduce risk of altitude sickness.
